Learn all about the parts of the Walkin Wheels Dog Wheelchair

Leg Rings

The back of the dog is held in place by our leg rings, or our rear harness. We have found that most dogs adapt quickly to the leg rings. For animals with more complicated comfort needs, our rear support harness can be a convenient and stable harnessing system. The leg rings are included with the cart. The harness is optional.

The Rear Harness (optional)

Our unique harness system offers flexibility and comfort.

Neoprene supported by nylon webbing and high-impact plastic clips supports the back end of the dog. The neoprene is a special kind of 'wetsuit' material that can be cut, if necessary, to avoid sensitive areas of the dog and allow free elimination.

Depending on the size of the dog, there may be a great deal of extra strap left over. Excess strap may be cut. The ends can be sealed with a candle or lighter to prevent fraying.

The clips that attach the harness to the wheelchair have round loops at the end for easy attachment/detachment. Also, we sell 24'' long handles that can be clipped to these loops to help carry the dog when he is not in the wheelchair.

The size of the harness is determined by the girth of one back leg. If the dog's leg is too big around to fit into the leg-holes of the harness then the harness is too small. Girth measures of one back leg:

Less than 9" Small          9-12" Medium     12-15" Med/Large   15-17" Large    18-22" XL

The Front Harness

The front harness goes around the neck of the dog, with another strap (red) that clips underneath the chest.

comfort sleeves for front dog harnessThe shoulder pad (A) is made of neoprene and keeps the straps and buckles from causing discomfort for the dog. The red strap (B) goes behind the front leg, underneath the chest and holds the front harness securely in place. Neoprene comfort sleeves wrap around the straps for the dogs comfort. The ONLY difference between the large and small front harness is the neoprene comfort sleeves. The comfort sleeves can be cut in half for smaller dogs. Girth of chest up to 44", or XL up to 64"

The Parts of the Dog Wheelchair

Frame of the dog wheelchair

 Frame:
The Frame itself is powder-coated aluminum. It will not bend, break, or rust. The molded plastic knuckles attach the frame and the legs in such a way as they cannot possibly slip. 360 degrees of 'teeth' hold the knuckle in place at every point.
On the side of the knuckle, a spring-loaded turning cap allows you to loosen the knuckle and swivel the legs up or down.

Abouut three turns of the knob should be enough. Do not turn the dial so that it comes all the way off -- although if you do it is easy to screw back on.

back connector of the dog wheelchair Width Connectors:
The back connector connects the left and right side of the frame together. If the width of your dog is 5 - 9 1/2 inches, you will use the smaller back connector. 9 - 13.5 inches will need the longer connector. Don't worry though, the "Cart Wizard" will choose the correct size for you when you get to our shopping cart to buy a walkin' wheels.
 Length Extenders:
These are called the Length Extenders. The length extender connects the front harness in place with the cart. The length extenders are adjustable. However there are two different sizes. If your animal's length is 18-25 inches you will need the larger extender, If the animal is 9-19 inches you will need the smaller extender.
Struts:
These are the struts. They are what the wheels are attached to which then snap into the cart. The struts are adjustable within a range of about three inches. The struts come in 4 different sizes from 6 to 15 inches. The correct strut will be chosed for you based on the "Groin to Ground" measurement.

Available are 4 sizes of Foam-Filled wheels; 4", 8", and (not shown) 12" and 16". The 12" and 16" wheels are outfitted with bearings and are also available as Air-Filled pneumatic tires for active dogs, improved traction, and off-road use.The correct size strut is chosen based on the Groin to Ground measurement.

Safe and easy to use. They clip onto the rings on the rear harness or the leg rings. Straps can also be clipped onto the stirrup holders on the back of the cart to help life the wheelchair.
