1 – Commitment
This Professional Pet Sitter cares for handicapped, disabled, and special needs pets where such care will not threaten the health or safety of the pet.
- Pet Sitter will not apply additional charges for the care of handicapped pets unless the charges can be shown to be directly associated with the care of the pet such as special food, medicines, or equipment needed that is not supplied by the pet owner.
- Pet Sitter is willing to use any necessary equipment, as supplied by the pet owner, in the care of the pet. This includes
- wheelchairs
- walking assistance equipment like slings, harnesses, and rear-support leashes
- protective equipment such as pet boots, protective boots, or protective clothing
- and other equipment as needed by the animal and supplied by the pet owner
2 – Capability
This Pet Sitter has the capability to care for a handicapped pet.
- Vehicle: If Pet Sitter uses a vehicle, a ramp is available for use if needed
- Facility: If Pet Sitter brings pets to a facility for care, the facility is equipped with:
- ramps where pet is required to use stairs
- rugs or floor coverings where pet is required to traverse hardwood or other slippery surface
- raised bowls for access to food and water
- Pet Sitter is familiar with the use of basic handicapped pet care equipment.
3 – Education
Pet Sitter is familiar with the following procedures.
- How to put on and use
- front and rear harness
- belly-type carrying sling
- pet wheelchair; support sling type and fixed saddle type
- pet boots and leg splints
- leg wraps, diapers
- Expressing an animal (urinary and bowel)
- Exercise requirements & methods
- Indications that veterinary care may be needed
- Lifting a disabled animal
4 – Suspension and Revocation
To support the value to the caretaker of this certification the Pet Sitter agrees that, from time-to-time, handicapped pet owners referred to them may be interviewed about their experience with the service. If, based on these interviews, HandicappedPets.com feels that the Pet Sitter is not adequately prepared to care for handicapped pets, HandicappedPets.com may require further documentation and reserves the right to suspend or revoke the certification. Upon revocation, the Pet Sitter agrees to remove the certification logo and return all copies of the certificate. Processing fees are not refundable.
